일평생 희생과 충성, 믿음과 신앙의 유산을 남겨 주신, 우리의 아버지-English Translation

저희 아버님께서는 마흔세 살 때 고국을 떠나 형제들과 그 분의 모든 삶을 희생 하시고 어린 아들과, 3살 된 여동생의 손을 붙잡으시고, 이민의 역사가 시작 되었습니다.  그때가 1974년 8월이었습니다. 우리 네(4) 형제들을 위해 보다 낳은 미래를 주시기를 위해 셨습니다.  그 당시 저는 만 8살 이었습니다.  오늘 말의 실수가 있더라도 부족하나 양해 주시기를 부탁 드립니다.

아버님께서는 아홉(9)형제 중에 여섯(6)번째로 태어나시어, 큰형님께서 일찍이 도미 하셔서, 아버님은 우리 가문을 이끌어 가야 하는 무거운 책임을 맡아 셨습니다.  어린 나이부터 무거운 짐을 가지시고, 일평생 단 한번이라도 불만 불평 하시지 않고, 사랑하는 아내와, 가정, 교회, 남을 위해 희생 하시고 배려 하는 마음으로 사신 분이십니다. 

말씀이 별로 없어 셨던 분이셨습니다.  그러나, 어떠한 말보다, 행동으로 저희들을 가르쳐 주셨습니다.  언제나 자상하시고, 정직하시고, 믿음의 반석이 되신 분이었습니다.  가정으로부터 교회, 모든 개인관계에서도, 한결 같이 변함 없이, 말씀보다 행동으로 가르침을 주셨습니다.

몇 십 년 동안 직장 생활을 하시면서, 저의 기억으론 쉬시는 날이 없어 셨던 듯 합니다.  이른 아침마다, 어머니를 모시고, 두 분께서는 또 하루의 수고를 하셨습니다.  어려운 초기 이민생활이었지만, 원한 것 뭐든지 챙겨 주시고, 없어도 가정을 지키시고 챙겨 주시는 그 모습으로 인해, 저는 모자랐다는 생각 해본 적이 없었습니다.  이민 초기엔 자동차가 없어서, 아버지께서 약 2 mile 된 거리를 걸어 셔서 노랑 자동차 장난감을 사주신 것이 기억 속에 남습니다.  한국에서도, 퇴근하시고 들어 오실 때 장난감을 사주신 것도 아버님의 자상한 그 분의 마음이 저에게 40년 지나서도 아직도 감동을 줍니다.  아버지의 자상하신 모습, 저의 몸에도 배어, 저도 저희 아이들한테 하나 하나식 챙겨 주는 것이 생활 습관이며 또 섬김에서 받는 기쁨의 유산이 되었습니다. 

늘 교회를 섬기시는 모습도 지켜 봤습니다.  성가대로부터, 장로 취임 하실 때까지, 사모하시던 에눅회, 집사, 장로, 또한 특별히 주님의 종, 많은 목사님들을 눈물의 기도로 섬겨 셨습니다.  제가 고등 학교 시절 때, 아버님께서 밤마다 작은 방에서 성경을 읽으시며, 기도 하시는 모습을 지켜 봤습니다.  섬김의 마음, 믿음의 기도, 하나 하나씩, 그 분의 행동을 지켜 봤습니다. 저에겐 기도 해라 말씀도 없어 셨습니다.  그러나, 아버님의 기도하셨던 모습이, 저에게는 하루를 기도로 시작하며 하루를 기도로 마무리하는 그 또한 아버님의 신앙의 유산입니다.  

누구보다도, 정직하게, 지혜롭게 행동으로 믿음의 가정을 세워 셨습니다.  그러한 섬김… 예전에도 지나쳤다고 말씀 하신 분들 있어서며, 현재 시대 사람들이 이해 하지 못할 수도 있지만, 저의 아버님은 친 할아버지의 추도 예배를 약 50년 동안 드렸습니다.  더욱 놀라운 사실은, 저의 할아버지께서는 저의 생일날에 소쳔 하셨습니다.  저의 생일 축하해주시면서, 고인의 아버지를 잃어 셨던 슬픔은, 단 한번도 보여 주시지 않았습니다.  이 사실은 제가 할아버지의 산소를 갔을 때 알게 되었습니다.  추도예배에는 주님의 종, 목사님들 꼭 모셔서 예배를 드렸습니다.  아버님의 충성하신 모습, 저도 본 받아 아버님의 유산이 될 것입니다. 

이러한 아버님의 헌신, 섬김, 희생, 믿음이, 이세상 어떤 물질 보다 더 귀한, 믿음과 신앙의 유산들 남기신 우리 아버님입니다.  이세상 육신의 고통을 벗어 시고, 하나님의 빛난 면류관을 쓰시고, 이제부터 영원토록 하나님과 함께 동행 하십니다. 

마지막으로, 아버님의 일흔 일곱 생신을 맞이하여 이 글을 올려 선물로 드렸습니다. 

아버님의 지혜

어린 시절 어리석었던 아버님의 아들, 용서 해 주세요.
아버님은 여전히 변함 없어 셨고, 다만, 제가 성숙 해 졌을 뿐입니다.
아버님은 더욱 존경스러우신 같았고, 더욱 지혜로워 지신 것 같았지만,
아버님은 변함 없어 셨고, 다만 저의 눈이 열린 뿐이었습니다. 

침묵은 끝 없는 사랑
무관심은 끝 없는 인내
어리석었던 제가, 이제서야 깨달았습니다. 

아버님, 사랑해요, 그리고 감사해요.  아버님의 무한한 희생과 기도가 오늘 날 제가 존재 할 수 있는 것이 아버님의 기쁨이 되시기를 간절히 빕니다.

아버님을 사랑하는, 존경하는 아들이 감사 드립니다.

Our Father

A Life of Sacrifice and Dedication, A Legacy of Faith and Belief 

At the age of 43, my father left his homeland and immigrated to the United States, leaving behind all his family, all that he had known.  He had in one hand, mine, in the other, the hand of my little sister who was just 3 years old.  He made this difficult decision to immigrate, to give his children a better life.  He sacrificed all that he had, all that he had known, for his family.  This was the beginning of our lives in the United States in August of 1974. 

My father was the 6^th of 9 siblings.  As his older brother immigrated to the US early on, my father inherited the responsibility to become the head of the family and carried this cross but never once complained of this great responsibility.  Rather, he lived to sacrifice and provide for his loving wife, his family, his church. 

My father was a man of few words.  But his actions spoke louder than any words could ever say.  He was always caring, kind, a man of honor, a pillar of faith.  He served and sacrificed for his family, his church, in all his personal relationships, unwavering righteousness.  Words cannot describe him, his actions spoke louder.  His actions defined him and they taught us. 

He worked diligently for decades, and to my recollection, he never took a day off.  Early every morning, he went to work and drove my mom to her work as a registered nurse.  They both worked another hard day’s work, for us.  We struggled as immigrants but my dad always got me everything I wanted.  Even though we did not have much, my dad always sacrificed for his family and made us feel as if we did have everything.  I never felt like I was missing out, because the truth was, that he did provide everything we needed, a loving, caring family, a pillar of strength through faith.  When we first immigrated to the US, he walked several miles to buy me a yellow model car, I still remember having the joy to build that little vintage Chevrolet car.  When we lived in Korea, he would come home after work and brought home toys. He bought me a toy tank, more than 40 years later, I still remember playing with it.  His actions instilled his care and dedication to family, and today, I have the joy of getting gifts for my children.  

I watched my father serving the church.  He served the church, as a choir director to church elder, his beloved church group, the Enoch Missionary Group, deacons, and other elders.  He especially loved and served the Lord’s servants, pastors.  He prayed passionately for his beloved pastors.  When I was in high school, I watched him with his Bible in hand, meditating on God’s words, and praying, every night in the little den.  His heart of sacrificing, prayers of faith, I watched each action.  He never told me to pray, but watching my father pray every day, I now begin each day with a prayer and end each day, with a prayer.  This is the legacy of faith that he has given me.

My father was a man of honor like no other; he raised a family of faith through wisdom in all his actions.  His sacrifices… He was at times chastised, criticized by some because they could not understand, especially the younger generation who could not understand why my father held a memorial service to honor his father’s passing for 50 years. My grandfather passed away long before I was born.  Every year he invited and served a pastor a memorial dinner in honor of my grandfather. 

My grandfather passed away on my birthday.  My father never told me that, he never once showed his grief, what sacrifice to celebrate my birthday but to be grieved for the loss of his father.  I found this out when I visited my grandfather’s grave some 20 years ago.  I hope that my father’s dedication will serve as a model for this and future generations.  It is a legacy which I will now have the privilege of upholding.  

My father’s life was one of sacrifice, dedication, and faith.  My father left our family, his children, a priceless gift, a legacy of faith and trust in God.  My father has left his painful physical body, and received God’s glorious crown, and he now walks with Him now and forever, reunited with his beloved father and mother.  We are overwhelmed with grief, but we now wait for the day when we will be reunited with our father in heaven.  

In closing, this is a poem I wrote to my father on 77^th birthday 

A Father’s Wisdom 

Please forgive the ignorance of my youth
You have not changed,
It is I who matured
You appeared to become so much more respectful and wise
But you have never changed and have always been
It is I whose eyes were opened 

Your silence was never ending love
Your apathy was endless patience
I now see through the ignorance of my youth

Dad, I love you, and I thank you
Your endless sacrifices and prayers
They have allowed me to become the man that I am today

I pray that this will become your joy
From your son that loves and respects you, thank you
