In September of 1989, I began training with GM Myung. At that time, I was yet another of the hundreds of black belts that had walked through those doors. The master was very fair and told me that I had to learn all the techniques over again - 2 a day until I caught up, from the beginning but that I would also get to learn black belt level techniques, one a day. So he asked me, "what did you learn last", words I would hear for the next 15 years. There was a point when he stopped asking "what did you learn last" and it changed to "what haven't you learned yet". I proudly stated that I had learned knife defense and was then asked "how many techniques?" to which I responded, "around 10". The GM didn't miss a beat but had an expression that I understood at a later date... He proceeded to teach me knife defense and my arsenal of about 10 techniques turned into over 80 at which point I understood the expression on his face when we started. This was the beginning of many moments of humility and humbled at the breadth and depth of our beloved art.
How did you feel on your first day of training? How does that compare to where you are at today?
